Tubal Obstruction
« Back
Tubal obstruction occurs when the fallopian tubes are not able to let the egg and the sperm meet in order to undergo fertilization, making becoming pregnant through natural means impossible.

Commonly, tubal obstruction occurs due to infection such as pelvic inflammatory disease. Other causes include tubal ligation procedures, adhesions (scarring) due to previous surgery, endometriosis, appendicitis, bowel disease (crohnes disease) and other pelvic or abdominal infections.

Treatment

Before the advent and success of IVF, some tubes were opened at surgery. However, the success of this surgery may not be long-term as the tubes can scar over again. Additionally, these women are at increased risk of an ectopic pregnancy (tubal pregnancy). Women who have had their tubes tied previously to prevent pregnancy, have an increased chance of successful opening of their tubes and may choose to speak to their infertility specialist about this. This is very advanced surgery and should only be done by a physician with specific training in this area. In many cases, it may be more efficient to undergo IVF than have the tubes reopened.
