Advancing Age of the Woman
« Back
Maternal Age
Fertility of women declines as women age. This decline begins in most women around the age of 32-35 and takes a steeper decline once women reach the age of 40. Contrary to all the media claims, women having children in their late 40’s and 50’s is rare. Those media claims often do not relate that those pregnancies are due to the use of donated eggs from younger women. There are tests that can be used to help guide your infertility specialist as to the advancement of the aging of your ovaries and thus your eggs. Aging eggs do not respond to stimulation medications, fertilize or implant as well as when the woman is younger. They are also at increased risk of miscarriage and Down’s Syndrome babies.

Treatment
The best treatment for advanced maternal age is to seek investigation and treatment early. Some women may benefit from IVF as it is considered advanced fertility treatment that is needed to overcome aging eggs. However, even IVF may not overcome advanced maternal age in women age 44 or older. These women may become pregnant through the donation of eggs from a younger woman.
