Most women with uterine fibroids do not need treatment. Fibroids that do not cause symptoms (pelvic pain, abnormal uterine bleeding most commonly) can be left alone. But for women who find fibroids affecting their quality of life or ability to be pregnant, there are treatments available.
Hormonal treatment may be prescribed for long-term control or short-term relief of fibroids in women who are not looking to become immediately pregnant. These drugs suppress estrogen and progesterone and may shrink fibroids. However, these are not long-term solutions as they produce the spectrum of menopause changes on a temporary basis. Some fibroids are amenable to surgical removal. A myomectomy (removal of a fibroid with leaving the uterus alone) can be performed by your infertility specialist. A hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) is the only permanent solution to fibroids. |
