MESA (microsurgical epididymal sperm aspiration)
« Back

With this method, fluid that contains sperm is collected from the small tubes of the epididymis, through a small incision. Several areas of the epididymis may need to be sampled, but the testicle is not entered. This technique usually collects enough sperm to use and freeze for future use.

A local anesthetic is used to numb the area and the patient may be lightly sedated or can be given a general anesthetic if the procedure is to be done in the hospital setting. The incision in the scrotum is about half an inch long. Complications are rare but may include a slight chance of bleeding, swelling or infection. The patient can return to work and regular activities within 48 hours. Sperm retrieved using this

technique must be injected into the egg by ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) techniques.
