Surrogacy
« Back
Surrogacy is the process in which a woman carries a baby to term and delivery for a couple. The egg and sperm that contributed to making this baby are from the couples that are unable to have and carry the child themselves.

Couples who most commonly seek this reproductive service are the following:

The woman is unable to carry the child herself because her uterus is damaged from other causes (infection, surgery).

•

A woman who may not have a uterus because it has been removed due to cancer or was born without one period.

• A woman who was born with an abnormal uterus that is unable to carry a    pregnancy

• A woman who has had many miscarriages for an unknown reason (recurrent    miscarriages).

The laws in Canada require that surrogacy can only occur in an altruistic fashion (no payment or benefit to the surrogate woman). Most commonly, the woman of the “donor” couple undergoes IVF but does not receive the embryos. Her eggs have been fertilized in a dish with her husband’s sperm. The embryos that have resulted are then placed in the uterus of the surrogate woman who then carries the pregnancy. All surrogates and couples interested in this process undergo extensive legal and psychological counseling.
